Youth benefits of participation in the project
From June till July, 2015 in Riga the Latvian Information and Communications Technology Association (LIKTA – abbreviation in Latvian) in cooperation with Ltd. Latvenergo provided an internship opportunity for youth within the framework of the project “Delivering on skills for growth and Jobs”, Nr VP/2013/010/181. After the training and internship in one of most well-known and experienced companies in Latvia one of the participants Marija Vilne shared her view about the benefits of participation in fit4jobs.
Marija Vilne is a very active and motivated young woman, who actively participates in different social activities and also is trying to find a job in her field of interest. Already in the training process Marija proved herself to be a person who is willing to gain new knowledge and skills, also she could easily adapt to new circumstances and present herself in the best way.
“I always try to improve myself by learning something new or on the contrary strengthen my knowledge in the given field, however, the most important reason why I applied for the Fit4job project was the objective of this programme, which was to provide an opportunity after the training course and the internship when all the knowledge and practical skills would have been acquired to sign a contract of employment with the particular company”: says Marija.
After the training course Marija continued with the internship in the company where she proved herself to be a responsible and interested person in activities related to the company itself, this also contributed to the fact that the company is willing to continue to cooperate with her in the future, which can also be regarded as the most important benefit of participating in this project. She also had a job interview after the internship in order for the company to understand if she would potentially want to continue to work in this company.
The training course of the project included acquiring of knowledge that can be gained only in the particular company during the course of the internship when you have to deal with real tasks. Marija thinks that the internship in relation to the training course duration was relatively short – just one month, so she had limited access to the company’s information, the company’s policy is understandable in this case, therefore, I recommend to extend the internship time to at least 2 months, as a couple of weeks are needed for one to get to know the company’s operational principles, but as soon as it is understood the internship is already over.
“She is a responsible young woman who is willing to work in the company. Marija is precise and accurate with the given tasks and has good communication skills, which are essential if you work with customers. Unfortunately, we don’t have an open position for now, but we had a job interview with Marija and we could possibly offer her a job opportunity if there will be suitable position for her in the future”, says the company’s Baltic Personnel Manager Santa Ustrisova.
The project can be considered a success for both sides – for the involved youth and the employer. Youth can acquire skills and knowledge that is possible to gain only when participating in the daily work of a company. The participation in such a project shows the motivation and willingness of the youth to work, and it is also very important for the employer in the personnel recruitment process. Overall the internship provides an opportunity for the employer to observe the knowledge, communication and other specific skills of the trainee, which are necessary for this position. The internship helps the employer to understand if the trainee is ready to acquire new skills, which are necessary for the company and the specific position, as well to understand if the trainee will be able to cooperate and work together with other colleagues.
